Arizona State has continued its winning start to the 2007/08 season by notching a 31-11 win at home against the visiting Clemson Friday night in Tempe, AZ.

The Sun Devils were able to take advantage of some lapses in the Tigers’ game, mainly in the second half, to set up a five tries to one margin. Clemson played a solid first half to trail by just 12-6 at the main break.

Clemson mounted a good deal of pressure, particularly in the first half, but ASU’s defense was up to the task. Hooker Tim Joynt led the Sun Devils’ try-scoring with two on the night, while scrumhalf Charles Schofield, eightman Ravi Deflippo and Kory Robideaux chimed in with singles. Flyhalf and goalkicker Tommy Lavelle added the extras via three conversions.

“We had some goals for this game and while we didn’t play brilliantly, we played solidly for the most part,” Arizona State head coach Gary Lane told ARN. “We lost a bit of our defensive structure in the first half, but in the second half we certainly stepped up a level.”

For Clemson, it was almost a carbon copy of their season opener against Arkansas State in which they didn’t execute. The Tigers’ lone try was a scorching length of the field effort by Luke DiMaggio.

“I thought we had a solid first half but ASU jumped on us early in the second half and rode it home from there,” said Clemson head coach Wright Henry. “I always want to win games, but we made this trip so that the players could experience some different rugby to what they’re used to.”

The result saw ASU move to 2-0, while Clemson fell to 0-2. The Tigers are scheduled to wind up their swing out west by facing Arizona on Sunday afternoon in Tucson.

Meantime, Rutgers hosted Marist College in a Met New York league match and the home team scored a 36-17 win Friday night in New Jersey. The Black Death led 24-5 at the half.

Rutgers ran in six tries and were paced by fullback Jeremy Sporn who bagged a double. Hooker Joe Meyerink, outside center Jason Nizolek, wing Tom Dehrens, and eightman Frank Voris all added singles. Dehrens’ try was his first ever.

“We played a bit sloppy but got it together at the end,” Rutgers president Bryan Blutstein told ARN. “We were dominating in the scrums.”

The result improved Rutgers’ record to 5-1 and assured them of postseason play.
