The Wildcats were too much for the Huskies and led 27-3 at halftime.
UW started strongly and tested the CWU defense early on around the fringes. Central Washington managed to adjust and took control of the game. Mike Nelson (2), Tim Stanfill (2), and captain Joe Schmid were among the try-scorers. Aaron Lee added the rest via his boot.
“We gave them three opportunities for shots at goal in the first half, but in the second half we didn’t give them any opportunities,” Central Washington head coach Bob Ford told ARN.
In the other match of Week Three, it was a long nine-hour drive to Pullman, WA, for the Oregon State Beavers and their trip home will probably seem even longer after being beaten 37-7 by Washington State.
The Cougars led 17-0 after the first 40 minutes and after allowing OSU to score a try from the resumption of play, they won going away. OSU had trouble retaining possession.
“We’re not there yet,” said Oregon State head coach Mark Webber. “They’re a handy team but I’m frustrated because we’ve got it, we just can’t put it together yet.”
Standings (unofficial):
Central Washington (3-0)
Washington (2-1)
Washington State (1-1)
Oregon State (0-2)
Oregon (0-2)
Elsewhere, #22 Colorado State played men’s Division I team Glendale in Glendale, CO, Saturday and it was the Raptors who prevailed 22-12.
The scores were all locked up at 7-7 at halftime. CSU’s Cole Hansen was named Man-of-the-Match after turning in another strong game.
“It was a good game with lots of pressure and big hits,” Colorado State head coach Blake Stevens told ARN. “I think it was a good match for us playing in a stadium with playoff pressure.”
