No major surprises from games played in the eastern half of the country, although Navy kept its unbeaten record intact at Kutztown’s expense.

Other Saturday winners included Rutgers, Harvard, Dartmouth, St Bonaventure, Buffalo and South Carolina.

The biggest game of the day was probably #5 Navy at #10 Kutztown and it ended up being a low scoring 15-5 decision to the Midshipmen.

Miserable weather conditions slowed the game down and limited the match to a three tries to one affair with Navy’s forwards better suited to the cold and wet than were KU’s backs. Tom Magnuson, Carid Scovill and Joe Lousche touched down for the visitors.

“We played real hard and got some tries through our forwards,” Navy head coach Mike Flanagan told ARN.

Navy’s win puts them into a tie for first place with #9 Delaware. They’re due to square off next Friday night in Annapolis.

In the other Premier League fixture, Rutgers snapped its two-game skid by beating Virginia 33-5. The Black Death led 21-0 at the break.

In the New York State Premier Division, new boys St Bonaventure dented Brockport’s postseason aspirations by topping the Dogs 20-15.

With an inch of snow on the ground and a chill in the air, St Bonaventure skipped out to an early 12-0 lead and took a 12-5 advantage into the main break.

“They had the game plan for the conditions,” said Brockport head coach Mike Hodgins. “They made the right adjustments and we didn’t.”

Elsewhere in upstate New York, Buffalo hung on for a narrow 6-5 win against Binghamton.

And in the final regular season matches of the new Ivy League Conference, #24 Harvard topped old rivals Yale 26-7 in what’s fondly referred to as ‘The Game’, while Dartmouth ran the table by beating Brown 36-15.

Meantime, South Carolina resumed its fall season with a 19-5 victory over North Carolina State. USC dominated the first half and led 19-0 at the interval, but the second frame degenerated into a sloppy contest.

Winger Chris Stevens, half Nick Hart and hooker Justin Sclachterman scored tries for the Gamecocks, while Cullen Clair slotted two conversions to round out USC’s scoring.

“A few backline injuries meant several key players were replaced and the backs were disjointed,” South Carolina head coach Geoff Mason told ARN.

“I was pleased however with the forwards efforts and the defense was strong all day.”

Last week USC won the Palmetto Collegiate Cup downing the College of Charleston 17-15 in the final.
