UF had a tough go of it before putting away a stubborn South Florida 20-3 in the Florida Cup final in Tampa.
“USF played very, very tough,” Florida head coach Ken Simmons told ARN. “They’ve improved a bunch since we last played them.”
The Gators led by just 5-0 at halftime following an Ian Foster try, but proceeded to dictate the flow a little more in the second forty as they put in two more scores by Reggie Wilson and Cory Penca.
Goal kicker Matias Groetaers added the other five points with a penalty and one conversion.
As a result, UF will go to the South Championships as the seeded team representing Florida.
“It’s been great because these guys have worked hard for three years,” added Simmons. “We just hope we can keep it going at the next stage.”
In Manhattan, KS, Kansas State wrapped up top spot in the Central Division with a narrow 24-20 win against Oklahoma.
In the other Sunday game, Truman State rallied for a 46-7 victory over Oklahoma State.
This weekend’s matches brought the Central Division regular season to a close with K-State clinching the title, followed by OU, Truman State and OSU.
Kansas State will next face off against Colorado State, the second placed team in the Western Division, in a play-in game on March 20 to decide who goes to the Western Conference Championships as the fourth seed a week later.
Two teams from the Texas Conference, LSU and Texas A&M, will be the #1 and #3 seeds, while Colorado has already secured the #2 spot by winning the Western Division.
“I’m looking forward to some real good performances from these guys,” Western RFU president Bill Sexton told ARN.
“We’ve done it a bit tough in the West in recent years, but teams are working real hard to take it up to another level.”
Meantime, in a non-league matchup Sunday, Colorado beat the University of Northern Colorado 29-15 in Greeley, CO.
