#2 BYU beat their rival #4 Utah 15-10 in front of a sold out South Field crowd in the ARN Game of the Week Saturday in Provo, UT.

The win for the Cougars was a tryless affair with all 15 points coming on the boot of Shaun Davies.

Utah's points came from two unconverted tries.

But it was the weather that was the story of the day. With six inches of snow on the ground only 30 hours before kickoff, the grounds crew worked their magic to prepare the field for the much-anticipated Wasatch Cup match.

With the field wet underfoot, the ball and footing of the players gave both teams trouble so both sides reverted to a straight forward attack and kicking game that at times slowed the pace of the game considerably.

But in the end too many penalties inside the Utah half gave BYU the opportunities they need to win.

"It wasn't a pretty game by any means," said BYU assistant coach Kimball Kjar. "We had to really work in attack and we held our own in the kicking game I thought. So in the end I was pleased with the outcome."

BYU led 9-5 at the half.

Despite his team's outcome, Utah head coach Blake Burdette said today's Wasatch Cup meeting was one of the more memorable in the history of the rivalry.

"These were two evenly matched teams," he said. "It was a great game, but we just came up short and it's unfortunate the ball didn't bounce our way in the end."

The result sees BYU secure the Pacific Coast’s top seed and #1 seed overall for the Round of 16. The Cougs will open their playoff chase for a repeat national title in Santa Barbara, CA, in April when they will face the Mid-Atlantic #2 seed.

In other major results, #5 LSU beat #17 Texas A&M 19-9, a result that has all but sealed the Tigers’ second straight Texas Conference title and the conference’s top seed for the Western Championships.

In the Northern California Conference, #3 St Mary’s downed Chico State 47-17 despite missing the services of several key players due to injury, while #11 UC Davis bounced back to form by tuning Sacramento State 38-12 to win the inaugural ‘Causeway Classic Cup’.

“It was a much better performance,” UC Davis head coach Andy Malpass told ARN.

In the Southern California Premier League, #6 San Diego State wrapped up its third consecutive Conference crown with a 95-0 pounding of UC Santa Barbara.

“It was our most complete performance,” said Aztecs head coach Matt Sherman.

And #9 Central Washington closed out its second straight undefeated league season with a 41-10 win against Washington in the Pacific Northwest Conference.
