All of a sudden Kansas State has burst into playoff consideration in the West by beating Oklahoma 51-12 in a crucial Central Division matchup Sunday in Manhattan, KS.

As a result of the doubleheader weekend, an idle Nebraska has retained the Central championship it claimed in November and K-State has finished second.

By rights, Kansas State, as #2 in the Central sub-region, is now in line to compete in the play-in weekend in Wyoming in two weeks’ time, while the Huskers, as the outright champs, advance directly to the Western championships in Ft Worth in April.

The Sooners, who started the day on 11 points and needing to win to get into playoff contention, just didn’t have answers to the K-State onslaught. OU scored two tries by Eric Meyers and David Peebles, while Kenneth McDonald converted one of them.

“We came in banged up and we slotted some guys into new positions they weren’t ready for,” Oklahoma head coach Kenny Forehand told ARN. “Give credit to K-State, they deserved it.”

Kansas State, which started the doubleheaders in third place on four points, had an outstanding weekend scoring two bonus point wins to leapfrog Oklahoma into second spot on the table.

In the other Sunday match, Truman State scored a bonus point win against Oklahoma State by putting up a 29-10 scoreline. Truman’s two wins this weekend were good enough to move them into third place in the Division.

For the young OU club, it’s now a case of building for next season, while Nebraska and presumably Kansas State live to fight another day.

It has been a long time since K-State has made it to the postseason, and their next game will be against Colorado on the play-in weekend.

Final Central Division standings (unofficial):
Nebraska (14pts)
Kansas State (14pts)
Truman State (11pts)
Oklahoma (11pts)
Oklahoma State (0pts)
