Kutztown University has opened its spring season with a 43-24 victory over visiting Syracuse University.

The Golden Bears outscored the visitors by six tries to four.

Kutztown’s backs did most of the damage scoring five touchdowns. All-American center Marco Barnard, center Marco Cardillo, wing Klye Moser, flyhalf Josh Keys and reserve fullback Jason Zinc all dotted down for the Bears.

Dirk Scheppers at #8 along with flanker Cory Collins were the KU forwards who got on the board.

“Syracuse played with great determination and impressed everyone in attendance, as their big forwards kept the Orangemen ever dangerous,” said Kutztown head coach Gregg Jones.

Kutztown travels to Richmond, VA, next week for the Mid-Atlantic Premier League playoffs. KU is slated to meet the University of Delaware in the first round.

Elsewhere, Central Washington University wrapped up its regular season  with a 47-22 victory over a mixed Seattle/Beach team.

"It was exactly the kind of match we were looking for before we take on Chico State," said CWU head coach Bob Ford. "Hats off to Beach for putting together a solid game that helped us identify some weaknesses."

Beach used the match to develop many players that have not seen time in their Division I and Super League schedule, while Central was able to start its 1st XV and then bring on eight reserves in the second half.

CWU will host the Pacific Coast Division I playoffs April 4-5 in Ellensburg, WA.
