Scoring began in the 16th minute when fullback Patrick Delaney scored the first of his six tries from a lineout.
Inside center Sam Hagopian got the ball directly from the scrumhalf and offloaded to outside center CJ Deausen, who broke the line and dished to Delaney for the try.
Delaney scored again seven minutes later when hooker Ben Hockin took a crash ball off the ruck, slipped by the defender and offloaded to Deausen, who fed Delaney for a try in the corner.
St Bonaventure found themselves shorthanded at the half hour mark when they were given a yellow card for a repeated team offense. Almost immediately, Rutgers capitalized with a Deausen score, putting them up 15-0.
Six minutes later, Delaney scored his third after a kick by flyhalf Tom Behrens was gathered by wing Tim Hoover and offloaded to the fullback.
The break did little to curb the Rutgers offense as Deausen bagged his second score right off the opening kickoff: poaching the ball from a Bonaventure prop at midfield and taking it the distance.
In the 46th minute, however, Rutgers had a man sent off followed by a St Bonaventure score to make it 25-5.
Eight minutes later, Rutgers responded when hooker Ben Hockin crossed the line after taking the ball from the St Bonaventure flyhalf deep in their territory.
Delaney, who moved to inside center, scored his second hat trick through tries in the 65th, 72nd, and 75th minute: all the result of cohesive team play and sublime finishing. Fullback Mike Beal converted Delaney's last try.
The game ended with a St Bonaventure penalty try due to a high tackle at the goal line by Rutgers prop Joe Malanka.
