USMMA had their hands full with the Black Knights but were able to outlast them despite a strong finish. Army scored on the last play to close the gap, although by then the damage had already been done.
“They were the Army side we’ve always played, well drilled and they had stamina,” USMMA head coach Anthony Connors told ARN. “My guys were more creative with their passing and lines and I think that was the difference.”
Elsewhere, Rutgers outscored Fairfield by five tries to one to earn another solid win, although the Black Death led by just 12-7 at halftime.
Rutgers’ forwards dominated the game through good rucking and good support running. Captain and #8 Frank Voris paced his team to the W with two tries, while hooker Joe Meyerink, wing Greg Dube, and replacement hooker Ben Hocking chimed in with singles.
“Our season’s been going really well,” Voris told ARN. “We’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing and keep hitting hard.”
In a non-Conference match in Greeley, CO, Colorado State beat the University of Northern Colorado 40-33. Andrew Anama was named the Rams’ Man-of-the-Match for his four-try haul.
And in Midwest pool play, #20 Bowling Green racked up their fifth straight win by knocking off Michigan State 49-0. The Falcons led 20-0 at the main break. Center Scott Wallace scored a try in each half, while flyhalf Nick Viviani hit on two penalty kicks and went 5/7 on conversions.
In another pool play game, the University of Wisconsin-Stout edged UW-Whitewater 17-13. And in a late score from last week, Milwaukee beat Purdue 36-25.
