The Waratahs are set to appoint successful Sydney club mentor Chris Hickey as head coach after former Wallabies attack mastermind Scott Johnson confirmed his commitment to the Eagles.

The Tahs had offered the coaching job to Johnson, but he had already agreed to lead the Eagles for the next four years.

NSW Rugby Union officials were waiting to see if Johnson would honor his commitment to USA Rugby before finalizing their decision on a replacement for Ewen McKenzie, whose contract has not been renewed.

While Johnson had indicated his intention to be true to his word, it was believed there was a "complicating factor" which may have prevented him taking up the American role.
