The inaugural GC FOSTER Invitational 9s Rugby League tournament in Jamaica is being hailed as a resounding success.

There was speed, power and skills in abundance as the crowd was treated to a hugely exciting event.

University Division: GC Foster College won the University Division, beating UWI 14-10 in sudden death overtime. It was heartbreak for the UWI team who had gone undefeated throughout the day.

St Catherine Division: The GC Foster Angels community-based team scraped a 4-0 victory over the Portmore Eliminators who had also gone through the day unbeaten.

Kingston Division: The Duhaney Park Sharks defeated JDF Warriors 24-20. The powerful army team matched skills with their cross-town rivals in a game that produced some massive tackles and exhilarating sprinting from both teams.

Fastest Man Race: Utech flying winger Manning Marsh won the fastest man race.

“This tournament will hopefully become an annual event with invitations going out to UK and US-based teams,” said Jamaica Rugby League Association development officer Romeo Monteith.

“As Rugby League gets more popular, more Jamaicans want to play. It’s the excitement that draws the fans and players, the explosive nature of the game keeps everyone on edge. It is great and affordable entertainment for families to experience.

“There were approximately 150 players in one venue going at it; we even had players from St Vincent and Barbados in the University teams, adding a multicultural element to the tournament.”
