The US survived a late scare from Tunisia of all teams before eventually prevailing 26-21 on day one of the Hong Kong Sevens.

The Americans built what looked to be a solid lead against the Tunisians with Todd Clever among the try-scorers, but then had to withstand a hard-charging opposition before holding on in the face of a late surge to post the narrow five-point win.

Earlier in the day, England's young side produced a confident performance, coming from behind to beat Canada 24-12 with Chris Mayor scoring two tries for the English.

Elsewhere, top seeds New Zealand, South Africa, Fiji and Samoa all came through the potentially tricky challenge of the single match format of day one.
