Not the best of days at the office for the US as they went 1-2 in the city of churches on day one of the Adelaide Sevens.

The American team lost to both South Africa and Australia, but got some redemption by downing archrivals Canada.

The US started the day with a 43-0 drubbing by the South Africans. Fabian Juries and Mzwandile Stick were in sparkling form for the South Africans as they cruised against the USA. South Africa went on to win the pool decider against hosts Australia in the final match of the day, but both sides progress to the Cup quarterfinals on day two.

The Aussies, who got a scare from Canada, then put in a much improved performance in their second match against the US with James O’Connor scoring in the opening minute before Willie Bishop stole the show with three tries in a 31-19 victory.

The US national team finally got in the winners’ circle by edging Canada 19-17 in their last game of the day. They did it with a try right on fulltime. The win gave the US a 3-2 edge in head-to-heads against Canada in the IRB World Sevens Series.

As a result of finishing third in Pool C, the US will play England in the Bowl quarterfinals.
