The Washington Super League side will have a new head coach guiding it during the upcoming RSL season in the spring.

Gary Callander has been selected as the new guy in charge in DC.

Callander is a former captain of Scotland with 15 years of coaching experience, including the head coaching position at both Kelso and Wastonians. He will be looking to help rejuvenate Washington as he has with a number of Scottish clubs.

Washington, which is in the White Conference, kicks off its Super League campaign on the road against the Dallas Harlequins on March 15.

“Washington has a lot of young talent that will benefit from Gary’s wealth of experience and knowledge,” club spokesperson Mike Mihelic told ARN. “Gary will also be coaching Washington’s U19 team, as well as the Washington Warriors.”

The Washington Warriors is an inner-city youth team started by the Washington RFC in 2004. The club began with just seven kids playing in the PRU summer touch league. It now has U11, U13, and U15 teams, as well as an U19 team that competes in the PRU high school competition.

The team is comprised of boys and girls from all over DC, plus neighboring Prince George’s County, MD.

“Most of the kids are from DC’s inner city, although we have had kids from the Australian and New Zealand Embassies,” added Mihelic. “The program has grown every year since it was founded.”
