One of the main proponents of the proposed reform is Old Blue founder and chairman Dick Donelli.
Donelli suggests that if the league doesn’t make changes then its days will be well and truly numbered.
“To be successful in implementing changes, we need to have an attitude change,” says Donelli.
“I believe that we can all agree that the objective is to keep the playing field as level as possible and the rules fair for everyone.”
Among the proposed changes include splitting the league into East and West Conferences with teams in each conference playing home and away games to increase the number of matches that every team plays.
Another idea is to start the season in the fall, break for winter and resume in the spring with the championship game to be played at the end of the spring.
As for the title decider, it has been suggested that it could be done in one of two ways; either have the champion from the East play the champion from the West, or have the top two teams from each conference go head-to-head in semifinals and final.
Donelli suggests that as a cost saving measure, there should be a week’s layoff between the semifinal round and the final, assuming there is a semi round, in order to get cheaper flights.
The Chicago Lions have also put forward some suggestions for streamlining the league that for the most part are in line with Donelli’s proposals.
There are concerns that some teams could drop out of the RSL during the summer.
The league is due to meet in August for its regular summer gathering.
