Good day for US women in Hong Kong

The US women’s team kicked off the 2008 Hong Kong Women’s Sevens tournament on a high note, going 3-0 on day one to earn a spot in Friday’s semifinals against France.

The US started the day with a 36-7 victory over the Netherlands. Jenn Starkey (NOVA) and Christy Ringgenberg (Minnesota Valkyries) had two tries each for the women’s team, with Starkey also adding one conversion.

Also scoring were Teena Mastrangelo (Chicago North Shore) and Amy Daniels (Beantown), with a try apiece, while Pam Kosanke (Chicago North Shore) converted two.

Rounding out Pool A play, the USA shut out host team Hong Kong 33-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. Ellie Karvoski (Little Rock) led the side with 10 points, while Jenn Starkey added seven. Christy Ringgenberg and Teena Mastrangelo each had one try, with successful conversions from Ines Rodriguez (2) and Pam Kosanke.

The US team continued its scoring dominance during its quarterfinal meeting with the Arabian Gulf. Starkey repeated her game one performance with two tries and a conversion, while Kosanke ran in for one try and booted three accurate conversions. Mastrangelo and Karvoski each had 10 points for the Eagles, and Rodriguez kicked for one conversion.

“Day one at the Hong Kong tournament was a success for us. We worked on our game on both offense and defense, which showed well in scores,” US women’s Sevens coach Julie McCoy said. “Tomorrow's task is convincing the players to continue to play team ball.”
